When we talk about packaging design, we refer to the way a product is packaged—but it's not just about the graphic design of a package. Packaging design sits at the intersection of multiple disciplines: in addition to graphic design, it involves typography, paper engineering, the ability to craft a compelling message, and to effectively convey it through both text and visuals.
In addition, packaging must be created to clearly communicate not only the function of the item but also to suggest how it should be used. That’s why, to design effective packaging, it’s essential to consider the user experience and to design with the usage context in mind.
As you can imagine, to fully leverage this crucial communication tool, a wide range of professional skills is needed. At OIS, we can guide you through the process of creating effective packaging and help you get the most out of this important asset.
Packaging design can be done for new products or for products that are already part of the company’s portfolio but need to be updated.
Packaging is a key element of corporate communication and represents one of the most strategic touchpoints with your customers. Consumers go to stores with clear purchasing intentions—they just need to choose which products to buy.
Packaging must achieve the following objectives:

  • improve communication regarding the product’s usage by providing all the necessary information to the consumer;
  • ensure safety and convenience during transportation;
  • attract the consumer and thus increase the perceived value of the product on the shelf.
The product packaging displayed on the shelf is not the only type of packaging we can create. We can handle

  • Sales packaging (“primary packaging”) which refers to the single sales unit intended for the end user;
  • Multi-packaging (“secondary packaging”) which usually refers to boxes or cartons. This type of packaging, mostly designed for resellers, can also be used by end customers when the product is sold in multi-packs, or when the box can be converted into a countertop display unit.
Particular attention must be paid to the creation of both types of packaging, which must appeal to the end consumer.
Effective packaging must meet the following criteria:
- Packaging must be eye-catching. Since much information is now available online, packaging has shifted from an informational to a decorative role. That’s why today the main function of packaging is to evoke emotions and sensations through the use of lettering, materials, and colors.
- Packaging must be functional. Packaging must suit its intended use, meaning it should take into account the features of the product it contains. Let’s not forget that a key function of packaging is to protect the product and, if possible, reduce logistics costs and make the supply chain more efficient.
- Packaging must be sustainable. Now more than ever, consumers are concerned about sustainability. Green products have more appeal, making it essential to choose sustainable packaging that favors recyclable materials and minimizes plastic use. It's also crucial that the packaging includes clear disposal instructions.
To create effective packaging, it’s important to rely on communication and packaging design experts. Here are the steps we follow to develop packaging that works for your products:

  • Initial brief
    Before we begin production, our professionals will get in touch with you. The initial brief is when we get to know you and define goals, format, content, target audience, and communication style for your packaging.
  • Brand and product analysis
    In this phase, we study your brand to ensure the packaging aligns with your visual identity. We also analyze your product's technical specifications to determine the best type and format for your packaging.
  • Target, market, and competitor research
    To deliver an excellent final product, we conduct in-depth analysis of competitor solutions and preferences of your target audience.
  • Creative concept and graphic design
    Now that we have a clear picture, it’s time to move forward. We create the creative concept, select colors, printing techniques, closure systems, and packaging materials.
  • Content integration and final file production
    Once the design is approved and all materials are gathered, we insert final text, any barcodes and QR codes, and prepare the print-ready file including crop marks and fold lines based on the printer’s specifications.
We’re here to help with:

  • Shopping bags production;
  • Product boxes production;
  • Carton sleeves production;
  • Label production.
We also handle the full process from design to physical production of the packaging.
To develop your packaging design, we need the product’s dimensions, material, and technical specifications. In some cases, it may be helpful to receive a sample of the product, which we’ll return once the project is complete. It’s also useful to have high-resolution product photos and finalized texts. If you need professional product photography, our still-life photography service is at your disposal. Visit the multimedia section to learn more.
If you simply need to update your materials with new data or do a restyling, get in touch. We’ll provide expert advice and create a quote tailored to your needs. Please note that the material to be updated or restyled must be sent to us in an open, editable digital format (working file).
Absolutely. During the initial brief, we’ll discuss this as well. If you choose to include printing and assembly services, you’ll receive the printed and assembled material at your company, on time and ready to go.
